Over two thirds of respondents expressed an interest in the
'Help to Grow' schemes that were announced in the spring
2021 budget, demonstrating a substantial demand for this
type of support.
Limited details about the schemes are currently available but
the eligibility criteria includes a requirement for businesses
to have between 5 and 250 employees. This discounts many
businesses that expressed an interest and would benefit
from developing such skills.
Support is being channelled towards the smaller end of the
SME market and missing out other larger businesses, which
would also benefit, and need, the support. The middle market
is responding with collaborative working, sharing technology
and digital enhancements. Initiatives that recognise and
develop this collaborative way of working would provide
effective support for the middle market at this critical time.
